Death

The Health Insurance Society will pay “Funeral Expenses” in the event of the death of an insured person or dependent. It will pay “Funeral Costs” to the person who actually administered the burial of a deceased person in the event of a deceased person with no family members or close friends.

If the insured person has died

Required documents: Claim for Health Insurance Payment of Funeral Expenses (Costs)

  • Surviving dependents (Funeral Expenses)
  • The person who actually handled the burial of a deceased person if the deceased person had no family members or close friends (Funeral Costs)

Notes: When requesting payment of Funeral Costs, attach receipts indicating the cost of the burial, in addition to the Death Certificate.

When the bereaved family of the insured person hope to claim unpaid benefits, etc.

Unpaid benefits of a deceased insured person may be claimed on his/her behalf by his/her heirs. Those who can claim are limited to heirs in accordance with Articles 886 to 890 of the Civil Code.

  • Benefits that can be claimed・・・
    Injury and Sickness Allowance, Maternity Allowance, Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant, High-Cost Medical Expenses, etc.
    • * Burial fees (expenses) are not subject to inheritance and are not affected by inheritance/abandonment. Therefore, it is not necessary to attach a "Notification of Inheritance of Rights" when claiming burial expenses (expenses).

  • * When the Business Processing Center (BPO) receives a benefit claim form from an heir, for those who need to submit a "Notification of Inheritance of Rights", as a general rule, the Business Processing Center (BPO) will ask the heir to submit the notification.

If a family member has died

(Regarding death of an insured person, please complete the certification from the employer, and, for funeral expenses for the dependant family, that from the mayor of your municipality.)
